In honor of V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, the Baker University Women's Programs and Initiatives gave away 15 tickets to an upcoming showing of "The Vagina Monologues" at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Residence life coordinator Allison Scahill said the play showcases various issues that women face every day.
"It's basically a series of monologues about lots of different things relating to women and sex," Scahill said. "There are lots of monologues about rape and first-time sex."
Senior Megan Brokaw said she has previously attended the show.
"The purpose of 'The Vagina Monologues' is to educate both men and women about women's issues and to empower and educate people and make them aware that violence against women is still an issue," Brokaw said. "It's about issues that people sometimes put on the backburner that we should be familiar with."
Brokaw, who is a peer educator, said the show has an impact every time she sees it.
"I saw it in high school, and I read the book, and I've seen the movie," she said. "I've seen it at KU, and next week I'm going to see it at UMKC. I see the same things every time I see it, but it is still just as moving and just as empowering every time."
Scahill said the Women's Program promoted the event because the play addresses issues that pertain to women today.
"(The play) is really empowerment based," she said. "That is a lot of what we try to do in the program, and this experience can be really educational for those women who aren't very familiar with these topics."
Freshman Rose Garrison, who is planning to attend the event at UMKC, said she is eager to see the play.
"I just want to go because I heard from a friend that it was really good," she said. "I think it's good for girls to put themselves in situations like this, not necessarily because it's empowering or some great feminist thing, but because it's fun and educational."
"The Vagina Monologues" will show at 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at UMKC.
